wiped off the map

Wittenoom [1] north of the 26th parallel in Western Australia is to be wiped off the map due to health risks attributed to just visiting in the area of the asbestos tailings.

A spokesperson for the Asbestosis society said that engineers and electricians that went post the mining operations contracted mesothelioma and one had died.

More recently, there is a new study underway to investigate the impact of asbestos exposure on women and will also help determine whether asbestos is associated with ovarian cancer.

The town power was planned to be cut, no discussion according to the residents, and the power was cut as planned in June 2006.

Residents already maintain the roads and remove rubbish as the local council banned workers from visiting the town site. Degazetted means that Main Roads will remove the road signs.

I have very fond memories of visiting Wittenoom Gorge either on a specific outing or when travelling to and from Newman.

There are many beautiful places to visit in the North West of Western Australia, for example, Karijini and Millstream. With Wittenoom off the map, does this mean tourists are not going to be able to find their way to Wittenoom Gorge?

What about the mining company clearing up their mess, as geologist Mark Neville has suggested?
