a tale of two books

Book covers of You Grow Girl and Science in the Public.

My first book order from The Book Depository with free delivery to Western Australia has arrived as promised. That is, within 7-14 days.

Both books were ordered on Friday 17 March, 2007. You Grow Girl: The Groundbreaking Guide to Gardening by Gayla Trail arrived the following Friday (23 March), i.e. 7 days exactly.

Science in Public: Communication, Culture and Credibility by Jane Gregory and Steve Miller is one of the recommended texts for my Science Communication Strategies unit. It arrived today (Monday 26 March). Exactly 9 days after my online order was placed, and the delivery included two weekends.

Online ordering and delivery of two books may not seem like news to a lot of people. But I continue to be amazed that I can obtain things quicker from overseas, than I can from other major cities within the same country.

Encylopaedia Britannica says “Perhaps the most isolated of the world’s capital cities, Perth is closer in distance, time zone, and flying cost to Jakarta and Singapore than to Sydney.”

I would have thought Perth was less remote to the cities within Australia than that of any countries in the Northern Hemisphere, which is where most of our online shopping items originate.
